Kundalini Yoga, The Yoga of Awareness

Kundalini yoga is a physical and meditative discipline, comprising a set of techniques that use the mind, senses and body to create a communication between "mind" and "body". Kundalini yoga focuses on psycho-spiritual growth and the body's potential for maturation, giving special consideration to the role of the spine and the endocrine system in the understanding of yogic awakening.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

To be successful in life, you have to learn to change your gears to meet the circumstances around you. If you are not in control of your own transmission, life will be a disaster for you, no matter who you are. You have to learn to control your own energy. That's what Kundalini Yoga actually is. It teaches you to bring your transmission and your gas and your gears under control. Yogi Bhajan



There are 22 major forms of yoga, each one expressing a facet of the whole. Each different form of yoga is like a facet of a diamond. The diamond itself is Kundalini Yoga, the mother of all yogas. It includes all aspects of yoga within its teachings made up of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathwork), mantras (chanting), mudras (hand gestures), bandhas (body locks) and meditation.


According to the Yoga Sutras, what you can achieve with 12 years of Hatha Yoga, plus 6 years of Raja Yoga, plus 3 years of Mantra Yoga, plus 1 year of Laya Yoga can be accomplished in a single year of a perfectly practised Kundalini Yoga



Awakening the Kundalini Energy


The Kundalini energy is represented as a coiled serpent, coiled in three and a half turns sleeping at the base of the spine in a triangular bone called the sacrum. The Latin name Os Sacrum suggests that it is a holy or sacred part of the body. In the East, the serpent is a positive and a royal image considered auspicious.


Kundal in Sanskrit means "the coil in the curl of the hair of the beloved". It is that dormant creative energy, the blueprint for the full potential of humankind. When awakened, it travels upward along the spine, piercing through each chakra, activating their positive attributes along the way.
When it reaches the crown chakra, it activates the pineal gland to start secreting.. hence a major change in consciousness. This is why Kundalini Yoga is also known as the Yoga of Awareness. Awareness is when we live in the present moment instead of being attached to memories of the past or fantasies of the future. Most of us tend to hang on to too much unnecessary emotional and mental garbage of the past creating a veil of illusion shielding us away from our Divine Self. Awareness leads to understanding and understanding gives way to acceptance. When you can accept yourself, all your limitations fade away. All your fears, insecurities, and self belittlement cease to be. In its place are abundance, hope and the wisdom of your true worth. As we begin to climb the ladder of awareness through the chakras, all that is toxic in our lives begin to fade.


You do not have to charge in with the intention of raising the Kundalini to full enlightenment, although this is the goal of all forms of yoga. There is a more acceptable and gentle way of introducing you to the sheer potential that is within you and showing you how this potential can be released. Every time you embark on a kundalini kriya, the general pattern of a kundalini kriya is to awaken and build up the pranic energy. This is then guided to the relevant area that you wish to work on. For example, if your digestive system needs working on, a kriya to help with decision making or an emotional state that is upsetting you might be helpful. By directing the energy to a particular chakra, organ or issue in your life, this blockage will be dissolved and once again you will be back in balance.


There are over 8.4 million kriyas designed to deal with the day to day challenges we face today. Kriyas are a specific combination of asanas, pranayama, mantras, mudras, bandhas and meditation to achieve a specific result. They address all aspects of the Human Trinity.


For example, there are
kriyas for the Mind  

- to clear confusion

- to rid addictions

- to clear haunting thoughts and subconscious garbage

- to challenge the ego

- to conquer one's imagined disabilities  

 

Physical Issues  

- to improve blood circulation, develop a strong immune, glandular and nervous system - delaying the ageing process

- detoxification

- speeding up metabolism

- developing flexibility and strength


Emotions
 

- to bring about feelings of ecstasy

- to dispel fear, anger, paranoia

- to attain the empowering ability to accept and forgive all aspects of your life

- creating Self Love

- connecting to your Higher Self  

 

We are a spiritual being having a human experience, therefore, we need to be aware that Our Soul is the CEO and not the mind. We do not allow ourselves to be slaves to the mind and be controlled by its thoughts.


The body serves as a vehicle (in which the Soul is the driver) for us to travel around and experience this life. Just like a car, it needs routine maintenance and we cannot change models after a few years. This is the only vehicle we've got.


Our Soul sits within our heart, it holds the key to who we truly are... Divinity, Grace and Love...Learn to listen to your heart, as feelings are the language of the Soul. To live a bountiful, beautiful and blissful life, we need to open up our hearts.


The technology of Kundalini Yoga applies its science to our bodies, minds and emotions allowing us to experience our inner light of consciousness and to discover our real identity. It is more than just a set of physical exercise.
